  • BYD Sealion 7 Excellence vs Seal U DM-i Comfort – Which would you choose?
    chris_ev_melbC chris_ev_melb
    BYD Sealion 7 EV

Hi everyone, looking for some advice.

BYD Sealion 7 Excellence vs Seal U DM-i Comfort – Which would you choose?

I currently drive a BYD Seal U DM-i Boost, which has been a fantastic car overall. My only real complaint is that it’s quite slow, and I’d ideally like something with a bit more power and performance.

I’ve recently changed jobs, and my new employer requires me to have a company car. This means I’ll be getting rid of my privately leased Seal U and choosing between the Sealion 7 Excellence and the Seal U DM-i Comfort.

Initially, the Seal U Comfort works out cheaper per month. However, with the Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax increasing to 18% from 2028, the overall monthly cost eventually becomes very similar to the Sealion 7 Excellence.
This is where I’m struggling to decide.

The Sealion 7 Excellence appeals to me because of its performance, technology and overall specification. However, my biggest concern is the significantly reduced range compared with the Seal U DM-i, which can cover much longer distances thanks to its petrol engine.

On the other hand, the Seal U is something I’m already familiar with, and I love the practicality and flexibility of the hybrid system. I’m just not sure whether I’d regret choosing another one when I could have the much quicker Sealion 7 for roughly the same money.

For those who own a Sealion 7, particularly the Excellence:
How are you finding the real-world range, especially during winter?
Have you found switching from a hybrid or petrol car to fully electric inconvenient?
Is the performance and driving experience worth sacrificing the extra range?
If you were in my position, which would you choose?
I’ll be keeping the company car for four years, so I’m trying to make the right long-term decision.
Would really appreciate everyone’s thoughts and experiences. Thanks in advance!

Im still waiting for my BYD SL7 to arrive. For those have theirs already, will this towbar fit the SL7? I know this still need retrofitting to match the orientation of the Sl7 towbar slot. Thanks

4.6 L/100km at 110 km/h in a mid-size family SUV is super economical. I have the Premium AWD here in Melbourne and 5.7–5.9 L/100km on the Hume Highway matches my numbers.

The extra 1.2 L/100km on the highway is the trade-off for 238 kW and 0–100 km/h in 5.9 seconds when overtaking road trains!

I ditched my old Redarc BCDC + 120Ah lithium box when I moved from my Ranger to the Shark 6! Using 4% SOC over 48 hours is spot-on with what I measured on Fraser Island last month.

One tip: make sure you enable "Extended Tub Power / Camp Mode" in the DiLink Energy Manager menu—otherwise the tub 240V inverter times out after 10 hours if the doors stay locked.

BYD Atto 2 (Yuan Up) 45.1kWh UK & Europe Owner Impressions: City Efficiency, Boot Space & Heat Pump

Why we picked the Atto 2 over the Dolphin:

    • Boxier SUV upright seating position with higher hip point and much easier child-seat loading.
    • CTB (Cell-to-Body) construction: First compact BYD crossover with the battery integrated into the floor structure—feels super rigid over speed bumps.
    • 400L boot with a dual-level floor that swallows a full-size pram upright.
    • Efficiency: Averaging 4.5 miles/kWh (13.8 kWh/100km) around Greater Manchester and the M60 ring road, giving a reliable 195–205 miles of real-world urban/suburban range.

Important note for 2022–2023 Atto 3 owners upgrading from the narrower 215/55R18 to the 2024+ factory size 235/50R18: both use the exact same 18x7.5J alloy wheel rim! So 235/50R18 bolts straight onto early rims with zero issues and gives you an extra 20mm of rubber footprint on the road.

  • Real-World 2.5T Caravan Towing Test with BYD Shark 6 Over Mountain Passes: Fuel Economy & High HV Hold (50% SOC)
    chris_ev_melbC chris_ev_melb
    BYD Shark 6 Ute byd-shark-6 towing-payload australia

G'day mates, just got back from a 1,400km round trip from Brisbane up through Cunningham's Gap and out to Stanthorpe towing our 2,480kg dual-axle off-road caravan behind the 2025 BYD Shark 6 Premium, and wanted to share the hard numbers because there's been plenty of speculation online.

Real-World 2.5T Caravan Towing Test with BYD Shark 6 Over Mountain Passes: Fuel Economy & High HV Hold (50% SOC)

    The Setup

    • Ute: 2025 BYD Shark 6 Premium (stock 18" alloys, tyre pressures bumped to 42 PSI rear / 38 PSI front cold)
    • Van: 2.48T loaded ATM, ~230kg towball weight, Redarc Tow-Pro Elite v3 electric brake controller
    • Settings: HEV Mode + High HV Hold set to 50% SOC before leaving the driveway at 98% charge, Regenerating braking on High.

The Secret to Towing Without Running Out of Puff

If you leave the Shark 6 in default Auto EV/HEV mode and let the Blade Battery drop to 25% SOC before hitting a long climb like Cunningham's Gap, the 1.5L turbo Miller-cycle engine has to work overtime screaming at 4,800 RPM to both propel 5+ tonnes GCM and buffer the pack.

Instead, here is what worked flawlessly:

    1. Lock in HEV + 50% SOC Hold as soon as you hook up the trailer on the flat motorway.
    2. At 95–100 km/h on the highway, the engine hums quietly at ~2,100 RPM acting as a generator + front axle assist while keeping the battery sitting between 48% and 52%.
    3. Coming up the 8km climb at Cunningham's Gap, I held 80–85 km/h effortlessly. SOC dipped from 51% down to 36% at the crest — plenty of buffer left, zero power derating, and cabin noise was miles quieter than my old 2.8L Hilux!

    Real-World Fuel & kWh Figures

    • Flat motorway towing (95 km/h, mild headwind): 13.8 L/100km + 2.1 kWh/100km
    • Hilly/mountain range section: 15.6 L/100km (recovered 9% SOC coming back down the range on High Regen without barely touching the brake pedal!)
    • Combined 1,400km trip average (with two caravan park 15A overnight plug-ins): 13.4 L/100km

Anyone else towing 2.2T–2.5T with their Shark 6? Keen to hear what SOC Hold target you're finding best!

Let's keep a single master changelog and feedback thread for BYD DiLink Over-The-Air (OTA) Firmware Updates across Australia, the UK, New Zealand, and Europe so everyone knows what each version brings!

Key Highlights Across the Latest OTA Builds

    1. Three-Finger Swipe Climate Control Gestures (Anywhere, Even Inside Full-Screen CarPlay / Android Auto!):
      • 3 fingers swipe UP / DOWN anywhere on the screen: Adjusts cabin temperature (±1°C).
      • 3 fingers swipe LEFT / RIGHT: Adjusts AC fan speed (1 to 7).
      • No more exiting Apple CarPlay or Google Maps just to turn the fan down!
    2. Wireless Apple CarPlay & Wireless Android Auto Stability Fix:
      • Updated the 5GHz Wi-Fi Direct channel handshake so CarPlay no longer drops out near toll gantries or high-interference CBD intersections.
    3. Smoother ICC / Lane Keep Assist (ELKA) Calibration:
      • Dramatically reduced the aggressive steering tug and warning chimes on narrow country lanes without centre white lines (huge improvement for UK B-roads and Aussie backroads!).
    4. ** swipe-Down Quick Bar Customisation:**
      • You can now drag-and-drop tiles in the top pull-down tray to put SLIF (Speed Limit Chime Off), ELKA Off, and Battery Pre-heating right under your thumb.
