DIY Guide: Installing a 7-Pin Flat Trailer Wiring Harness & Towbar on BYD Sealion 6 (CAN-Bus Safe / No Dashboard Errors)
-
Dealers in Sydney and Brisbane were quoting $1,650–$1,900 fitted for a towbar and wiring loom on the BYD Sealion 6, so I fitted a Hayman Reese Class 4 Heavy Duty Towbar (1,300kg braked on Premium AWD / 750kg on Dynamic) and an ECU-isolated 7-pin flat Smart Harness myself over the weekend for $680 total.

Crucial Warning: DO NOT Scotch-Lock Directly to the Tail Light Wires!
The Sealion 6 body control module (BCM) monitors LED tail light current draw in milliamps. If you splice a traditional passive trailer plug straight into the rear loom, it will throw a "Check Rear Lighting System" fault on the dash and disable Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).
Step-by-Step CAN-Safe Wiring Install
- Use an Powered Smart Relay Module (e.g. Hayman Reese SmartClick or Jaeger 12V CAN module): The module only draws ~1mA signal sensing from the tail light wires and powers the trailer lights via a dedicated 15A fused 12V feed.
- Where to get constant 12V power in the boot: No need to run a wire all the way to the front 12V battery! Behind the left-hand side boot trim panel (remove the 3x 10mm bolts and plastic cargo hook), there is the factory rear fuse carrier with a spare constant 12V stud rated at 30A.
- Rear Parking Sensor Cut-Off: Connect the reed-switch wire from the 7-pin flat socket to the purple/white park-assist mute pin on the module so the rear sensors don't beep non-stop when reversing a box trailer or bike rack.

Champion write-up! That tip about the spare 30A 12V stud behind the left-hand boot trim saved me two hours of fishing cables through the sill panels. Fitted mine in Perth yesterday for my Thule 4-bike towball carrier.

Did you have to cut the lower black plastic rear bumper valance on the Sealion 6 for the Hayman Reese receiver hitch to poke through?
-
Yes, there's a small 85mm x 60mm cutout right on the bottom underside of the unpainted black diffuser lip. It's completely invisible when standing behind the car unless you get down on your hands and knees.

For New Zealand Sealion 6 owners: the Lockon Towbars NZ kit uses the exact same chassis rail bolt holes (4x M12x1.25 fine-thread captive nuts already welded inside the rear rails from the BYD factory — just peel off the circular tape stickers covering the holes!). Torque them to 110 Nm.

Confirmed this exact wiring pinout also applies to the 2025/2026 UK BYD Seal U DM-i when wiring a 13-pin Euro socket for caravan/cycle carrier lights. Zero dashboard warnings after 6 months of use.

I ran the exact same test last month on a rainy weekend trip. Regen braking in High mode remained super predictable, and the LFP pack voltage delta stayed under 12 mV on my OBD2 scanner.
-
My experience has been almost identical over the past 4 months. Zero rattles in the cabin so far, and the 360-degree camera clarity at night is still the best in its price bracket.
-
Interesting point about the charging curve. I found that plugging in around 15–18% SOC gives the fastest sustained peak kW before the BMS gently tapers above 80%.
