BYD Sealion 7 Excellence AWD UK Winter Motorway Range Test (M1/M6 at 3°C) & 230kW DC Rapid Charging Curve
-
Just wrapped up my first proper cold-weather motorway run in the 2025 BYD Sealion 7 Excellence AWD (91.3 kWh Blade Battery, 800V-class architecture with 230kW DC charging) from Cambridge up to Manchester and back in 2°C to 4°C wet UK conditions, and wanted to share unfiltered real-world numbers.

Test Conditions
- Vehicle: 2025 BYD Sealion 7 Excellence AWD on factory 20" Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres (39 PSI all round)
- Weather: 3°C ambient, wet roads, light headwind going north on the M1/M6
- Cabin: Heat pump AC set to 21°C Auto, heated seats level 1, pre-conditioned on the 7kW wallbox before departure.
Real-World Range & Efficiency (91.3 kWh Usable)
- Steady 70 mph (GPS) in 3°C wet:
2.8 mi/kWh(22.2 kWh/100km) → ~255 miles (410 km) real 100%–0% winter motorway range (or ~205 miles comfortable 100% down to 18% leg). - Mixed A-roads & 50 mph average speed cameras:
3.4 mi/kWh(18.3 kWh/100km) → ~310 miles (500 km). - Summer comparison (18°C): Last month I was getting
3.6 mi/kWhcomfortably on the same route (~328 miles real range).
230kW DC Rapid Charging Curve (Ionity 350kW Charger)
Plugged in at 11% SOC after using the built-in SatNav charger routing (which triggered battery pre-heating 25 mins prior):
- 11% to 35%: Held a rock-solid 224 kW – 231 kW!
- 50% SOC: Still pulling 178 kW
- 10% to 80% total time: 23 minutes 40 seconds (beat BYD's official 24-minute claim!).

23 minutes 10–80% on an LFP Blade Battery in 3°C British winter is seriously impressive. My 2024 Seal Excellence caps out around 150kW peak (and closer to 95kW in winter if the pack isn't warm). Moving the Sealion 7 Excellence to the 91.3 kWh pack with 230kW peak fixes the single biggest complaint high-mileage UK drivers had.

How are you finding the suspension tuning on broken UK B-roads compared to the Model Y Long Range? I test-drove a Model Y in Bristol last week and the rear suspension crashed over every pothole.
