How BYD Direct-Refrigerant Heat Pump & Pulse Self-Heating Work in Winter (0°C to 8°C Efficiency Optimization Guide)Here is a technical breakdown of how BYD's Direct Refrigerant Cooling & Heating Plate and High-Frequency Pulse Self-Heating work on the Seal, Sealion 7, Atto 3, and Dolphin—and how to configure your climate settings to save up to 18% winter range:
1. Why BYD Doesn't Use a Traditional Glycol Coolant Loop on e-Platform 3.0
- Instead of heating water/glycol and pumping it under the battery, BYD routes refrigerant directly through channels inside the Blade Battery tray, recovering waste heat from the 8-in-1 motor inverter, onboard charger, and cabin heat pump.
2. Three Settings That Cut Winter kWh Consumption
- Use Scheduled Departure While Plugged Into AC Wallbox: Pre-warming the cabin and battery plate using mains power for 15 minutes before unplugging saves ~1.8 kWh of initial cold-soak draw.
- Set Cabin Temp to 21°C Auto + Seat Heater Level 1: Every 2°C above 22°C increases heat pump compressor duty cycle by ~14%.
- Toggle Recirculation to Auto (Not Permanent Fresh Air): In sub-5°C highway driving, pulling 100% freezing outside air at 70 mph forces the PTC auxiliary heater to kick in alongside the heat pump.

BYD Sealion 8 (DM-i 5.0 & EV 7-Seater) Australian & UK Launch Tracker: Specs, Dimensions & TowingA 2,000 kg braked towing rating on a 7-seater PHEV SUV is the sweet spot between the Sealion 6 (1,300 kg) and the Shark 6 (2,500 kg). Plenty of families don't want a dual-cab ute just to tow a 1.8T pop-top caravan.

UK Lake District & Yorkshire Dales 850-Mile Tour in BYD Sealion 7 RWD Comfort (Averaged 3.8 mi/kWh!)Keeping muddy Lake District hiking boots and wet waterproofs in the 58L front frunk so the main boot stays clean is the best EV hack!

[SOLVED] BYD Atto 3, Seal & Dolphin 12V Auxiliary Battery Drain: Root Causes, Smart Recharge Logic & Best Lithium/AGM ReplacementThat tip about keeping your 12V jump starter in the Frunk (front boot) or glovebox — NEVER in the electric rear boot is critical! The bonnet is mechanical (two pulls of the footwell lever), whereas the rear tailgate is electric and won't open if the 12V battery is dead.

BYD Seal Performance / Excellence AWD (3.8s): Deep Dive on iTAC Torque Control, FSD Suspension & Ideal Tyre PressuresAfter 18,000 km in my 2024 BYD Seal Performance AWD (390 kW / 670 Nm) across wet Sydney commutes and spirited runs through the Royal National Park and Putty Road, I wanted to share some insights on how iTAC (Intelligence Torque Adaption Control) and the CTB (Cell-to-Body) chassis behave near the limit.

1. Why iTAC Feels So Different to Traditional Traction Control
Traditional ESC waits for a wheel slip sensor at the ABS ring, then cuts power or grabs a brake calliper — which feels clunky coming out of a wet hairpin.
On the Seal AWD, BYD reads motor rotor angle sensors directly at 10,000 times per second (100x faster than wheel-speed ABS sensors). When the front Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres hit a wet patch under throttle:- Instead of cutting power dead, iTAC seamlessly shifts torque between the 160 kW front induction motor and 230 kW rear permanent-magnet motor (and can even apply negative regen torque to a single axle) within 50 milliseconds.
- The result: you can plant your foot exiting a damp corner and the car just squats and catapults forward with zero drama.
2. Ideal Cold Tyre Pressures (235/45R19)
The factory sticker suggests 250 kPa Front / 290 kPa Rear (36 PSI F / 42 PSI R) — which is set for full 5-passenger load + boot luggage. If you drive solo 90% of the time, 42 PSI in the rear makes the back end feel slightly bouncy over sharp expansion joints.
- Solo / 2-Up Daily Sweet Spot:
38 PSI Front (262 kPa) / 39 PSI Rear (270 kPa)Cold. Transforms the rear ride compliance while keeping steering razor-sharp!
