After 3 months and 5,000 km behind the wheel of my BYD Shark 6 Dual-Motor DM-O PHEV, I wanted to put together a complete real-world breakdown covering daily EV commuting, heavy towing, off-road tracks, and 6 kW V2L camping.

5,000 km Real-World Review: BYD Shark 6 PHEV — Towing, Fuel Economy, V2L Camping & Off-Road (Ask Me Anything!)

    1. Summary of Real-World Numbers (5,000 km Log)

Driving Scenario Battery SOC Strategy Measured Fuel Use Electric Consumption Notes
    Daily City Commute (0–75 km) 100% $\rightarrow$ 25% (EV Mode) 0.8 L / 100 km 21.4 kWh / 100 km Engine rarely starts unless using full throttle
    Highway Touring (110 km/h) HEV Auto + Save 50% 7.6 L / 100 km 4.2 kWh / 100 km Very quiet cabin; adaptive cruise is smooth
Towing 2,400 kg Caravan Mountain Mode (Hold 60%) 13.8 L / 100 km 8.5 kWh / 100 km Instant 650 Nm torque makes hill starts effortless
Beach & Fire Trails (4x4) Sand / Mud Mode 9.4 L / 100 km 12.0 kWh / 100 km Drop tyre pressures to 20 PSI; virtual locking diffs work well

    2. What Surprised Me Most

    • 6 kW V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) Output: We ran a 2,200W induction cooktop, espresso machine, and Starlink simultaneously for 3 days off-grid and only used 34% of the 29.58 kWh Blade Battery.
    • Ride Comfort vs Leaf-Spring Utes: The rear independent coil-spring suspension (DMO platform) is miles ahead of traditional leaf-spring dual-cabs over corrugated roads.

Feel free to ask anything below — whether you are curious about heavy towing, V2L off-grid setups, OBD2 battery temps, or accessories!

Fantastic write-up @Alex_Shark6_OP! Quick question on the 2,400 kg caravan towing:

What happens if you climb a long 10 km mountain pass and the battery drops down to 25% SOC? Does the 1.5L turbo engine scream at high RPM, or do you lose power overtaking trucks?

This right here is why I'm switching from my diesel pickup to the Shark 6. Did you plug directly into the four 240V outlets in the tub, or did you also use the V2L discharge adapter on the Type 2 charge port?

For anyone wondering how the 29.58 kWh Blade Battery thermal management performs under heavy load, I logged live CAN-bus data via OBD2 on my Shark 6 during a 38°C ambient highway tow:

OBD2 PID Parameter Normal Highway (110 km/h) Heavy Towing (2.4T @ 38°C) DC Fast Charge (55 kW Peak)
          Max Cell Temp 31.2 °C 36.8 °C 39.4 °C
          Min Cell Temp 29.8 °C 34.9 °C 37.5 °C
          Cell Delta ($\Delta V$) 8 mV 14 mV 11 mV
Generator Output 12–18 kW continuous 35–42 kW continuous N/A

Key takeaway: BYD's direct refrigerant cooling plate keeps the LFP cells well below 40°C even in Australian summer conditions.

@Liam_AU The trick is to switch into HEV + Mountain Mode (or manually set SOC Save to 60%) before you hit the base of the mountain range!

When you keep the buffer at 50–60%, the dual electric motors still deliver full 320 kW / 650 Nm up the entire climb, and the 1.5T engine just hums steadily at ~2,800 RPM acting as a generator.

@Marcus_UK I used the built-in 240V sockets inside the rear tub! There are 3 outlets in the bed plus 1 inside the cabin, so you don't even need the external Type 2 dongle unless you want to run a separate extension lead to a caravan 15A inlet.

@Alex_Shark6_OP Tested the Forced 60% SOC Hold + Sand Mode combination on soft beach tracks over the weekend—dropping tyre pressures to 18 PSI and letting the 1.5T DMO generator hold battery buffer kept motor temps rock steady all afternoon.

@trevorm94 Also worth noting on the DMO stationary generator mode: even with the A/C running in the cabin and a 240V kettle plugged into the tray, the 1.5T engine barely ticks over at 1,600 rpm.
