BYD Shark 6 & Sealion 6 DM-i First 1.5L/1.5T Engine Oil & Filter Change DIY Notes (0W-20 API SP)
-
For BYD Shark 6 DMO and Sealion 6 / Seal U DM-i owners curious about the hybrid engine maintenance schedule:
On-Road Impressions, Efficiency & Setup Details
- Oil Spec: Fully synthetic 0W-20 API SP / ILSAC GF-6A low-viscosity hybrid engine oil (3.8–4.2 litres with filter).
- Because DM-i and DMO engines run mostly in their optimal thermal sweet spot (1,600–2,400 rpm steady load) and have electric water/oil pumps, the oil comes out remarkably clean—though doing an early run-in oil & filter change after the first 5,000 km of HEV running is great preventative care!

Cut open my first oil filter after 5,000 km of HEV highway running on the Shark 6—pleats were spotless, and having a spin-on cartridge right next to the sump makes changes super tidy.

@James_Brown Make sure you always use API SP rated 0W-20 oil (Penrite Enviro+ 0W-20 or Castrol Edge 0W-20 SP) designed specifically for hybrid stop-start engines.

@D_Harris_ACT Love how easy BYD made the underbody inspection plate to remove with just 10mm bolts.

Appreciate the honest perspective! Every EV and PHEV platform has trade-offs, and seeing real long-term feedback like this is why independent owner forums are way more useful than brochure numbers.

Good catch on those specifications. I checked the service manual torque specs and fuse layout over the weekend and everything matches what you outlined here.

Can confirm the latest DiLink OTA firmware smoothed out the power delivery curve and improved wireless CarPlay reconnection speed noticeably.

Completely agree on the practical usability. Being able to run a 2,000W induction stove and espresso maker off the V2L socket while only dropping 3% SOC over an afternoon is a game changer.
