2026 Australia BYD Comprehensive Car Insurance Megathread (Shark 6, Sealion 6, Atto 3 & Seal): Comparing NRMA, Allianz, Budget Direct & RAA
-
When EVs first hit Australia a couple of years ago, some insurers were throwing out ridiculous $3,000+ algorithms. Thankfully in 2025/2026 there is huge variance between underwriters — switching insurers at renewal just saved me $940/year on my BYD Shark 6 and $680/year on my wife's Atto 3!
Here is a real-world comparison of 2026 Australian Comprehensive Insurance Quotes (Rating 1 / 40yo clean history / garaged / $1,000 excess) so you don't get fleeced at renewal:
Insurer BYD Atto 3 ER ($48k Agreed) BYD Sealion 6 ($52k Agreed) BYD Shark 6 ($60k Agreed) BYD Seal Perf ($65k Agreed) Budget Direct / Auto & General $1,090 / yr $1,180 / yr $1,340 / yr $1,620 / yr Allianz Australia $1,240 / yr $1,210 / yr $1,290 / yr $1,490 / yr RAA (SA) / RACQ (QLD) / RACV $1,190 / yr $1,280 / yr $1,410 / yr $1,580 / yr NRMA / CGU (IAG) $1,680 / yr $1,790 / yr $1,950 / yr $2,380 / yr Youi / AAMI $1,540 / yr $1,620 / yr $1,840 / yr $2,190 / yr 3 Fine-Print Items Every BYD Owner Must Check in the PDS
- Glass & Panoramic Roof Cover: Make sure the optional Windscreen & Window Glass excess-free add-on covers the panoramic glass roof (Allianz and RACV specify windows & windscreen, check if sunroof glass is included!).
- Choice of BYD Certified EV Repairer: Essential so any structural/HV work uses genuine BYD parts and Blade Battery calibration tools.
- Charging Cable & Wallbox Cover: Allianz and Budget Direct include your portable EVSE and home wallbox cable against theft/accidental damage!

Unreal timing on this thread! NRMA just sent me a renewal notice for my 2024 BYD Seal Performance in Sydney for $2,410. Jumped onto Allianz online 10 minutes ago after reading your table: $1,465/year with $66,000 Agreed Value, Choice of Repairer, and Windscreen cover ($950 excess). Saved $945 in 10 minutes!

For South Australian owners: RAA Comprehensive came in at $1,145/year on our 2024 Sealion 6 Dynamic in Adelaide (including multi-policy discount with home & contents), whereas AAMI wanted $1,720.

In Queensland (Brisbane) on my 2025 BYD Shark 6 Premium with $3,500 of listed accessories (bullbar + canopy + electric brakes): RACQ quoted $1,385/year agreed value $63,500, and Budget Direct was $1,310/year. Definitely avoid lazily auto-renewing!

One tip if your BYD is on a Novated Lease: NEVER blindly accept the novated lease company's in-house fleet insurance (which often costs $2,200–$2,600/yr)! You have the legal right to buy your own comprehensive policy from Allianz, Budget Direct, or RACV for ~$1,250 and submit the receipt to your novated lease balance to pay for it out of pre-tax salary!

Just helped my sister set up her FBT-exempt novated lease on a 2026 BYD Dolphin Premium in Melbourne — $162/week out of net pay including comprehensive insurance, rego, tyres, and electricity reimbursement!
