Outback Red Centre Road Trip: Adelaide to Uluru & Kings Canyon (3,400 km) in BYD Shark 6 + Rooftop Tent
-
Completed our bucket-list 3,400 km Stuart Highway & Red Centre expedition from Adelaide to Coober Pedy, Uluru, Kings Canyon, and back in our BYD Shark 6 fitted with a tub rack, hard-shell rooftop tent, and 85L dual-zone fridge.

On-Road Impressions, Efficiency & Setup Details
- Corrugated Dirt Roads: Dropped our 265/65R18 A/T tyres to 24 PSI cold on the Mereenie Loop—the independent coil suspension soaked up corrugations better than any leaf-spring ute in our convoy.
- Fuel Economy: 9.6 L/100km at 110 km/h outback highway cruise with the rooftop tent mounted flush with the cab roof.

9.6 L/100km on the Stuart Highway with a rooftop tent and 85L fridge is awesome—mounting the tent flush with the roofline really saves aerodynamic drag.

@Archie_Carter How did the cabin air filtration handle the fine red bull-dust on the Mereenie Loop?

@archiet82 Kept the HVAC on Recirculate with the CN95 HEPA filter active—not a speck of red dust inside the cabin, and we blew out the engine intake pre-filter at Kings Canyon in 2 minutes.

Spot on breakdown. One detail I noticed after logging another 2,500 km is that the thermal management loop stays completely silent below 32°C ambient unless you chain two fast DC sessions back-to-back.

Great real-world data. Having proper owner telemetry instead of brochure claims makes configuring the car so much easier.

Appreciate the honest perspective! Every EV and PHEV platform has trade-offs, and seeing real long-term feedback like this is why independent owner forums are way more useful than brochure numbers.

Subscribed to this thread. Has anyone here compared this behaviour before and after the latest DiLink OTA firmware update? Mine felt noticeably smoother in low-speed traffic afterwards.
