Solar-Only EV Charging Setup with Zappi 2.1 vs Fronius Wattpilot for BYD Atto 3 & Sealion 6 (1-Phase 7kW & 3-Phase 11kW)
-
For fellow owners with rooftop solar (we have a 13.2 kW array + 10 kW Fronius Symo 3-phase inverter in Brisbane), here is how our solar diversion setup has performed over the last 6 months charging both a BYD Atto 3 (11kW 3-phase onboard charger) and a Sealion 6 (7kW 1-phase).

Key Takeaways:
- Auto Phase Switching (1-Phase to 3-Phase): Because the minimum EV charging current is 6A, 3-phase requires at least 4.1 kW of surplus solar to start, whereas 1-phase starts at just 1.4 kW. A smart charger that dynamically switches from 1-phase to 3-phase as clouds pass is essential.
- Cost per 100 km: Paying an 5c/kWh solar feed-in tariff means charging off surplus solar costs us just $0.78 AUD per 100 km!
What wallbox + solar integration are you running at home?

@Stuart_CompanyCarUK Quick update after another 1,500 km of testing this exact setup—everything is still working flawlessly and efficiency has actually improved by about 0.4 kWh/100km now that the tyres and brakes are fully bedded in.

My experience has been almost identical over the past 4 months. Zero rattles in the cabin so far, and the 360-degree camera clarity at night is still the best in its price bracket.

Completely agree on the practical usability. Being able to run a 2,000W induction stove and espresso maker off the V2L socket while only dropping 3% SOC over an afternoon is a game changer.

Appreciate the honest perspective! Every EV and PHEV platform has trade-offs, and seeing real long-term feedback like this is why independent owner forums are way more useful than brochure numbers.

@Stuart_CompanyCarUK Just wanted to thank everyone in this thread! Followed the steps in the second post this morning and it sorted the issue out in less than 10 minutes. Saved me a trip to the service centre.
