Rumors & tech breakdown on the 2.0T Heavy-Duty DMO BYD Shark 6 (3,500kg tow rating) — what do Shark owners think?
-
Lots of discussion in the ute community this week about BYD testing a 2.0-Litre Turbo Heavy-Duty DMO variant of the Shark 6 rated for a full 3,500 kg braked towing capacity alongside our current 1.5T DMO model:

1. Key Highlights & What Stood Out to Me
Following owner feedback from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, BYD truck engineers have been testing an upgraded 2.0-Litre Turbo DMO Heavy-Duty powertrain alongside the 1.5T DMO Shark 6:
- 2.0T Dedicated Hybrid Engine + High-Capacity Blade Pack: Boosts sustained generator output under heavy towing loads.
- 3,500 kg Braked Towing Rating: Upgraded rear chassis crossmember, heavy-duty variable-rate rear coils, and factory-integrated electronic trailer brake controller.
- Existing 1.5T Shark 6 owners also receive improved Tow Mode SOC Hold curves via the v26.09 DiLink OTA update!
2. Closer Look at the Specs & Hardware Packaging
Technical Parameter Official BYD Specification & Benchmark Platform Architecture DMO Super Hybrid Body-on-Frame (CTC Ladder Chassis) Combined System Output 321 kW (430 hp) / 650 Nm Dual-Motor AWD Battery Chemistry & Capacity 29.58 kWh LFP Blade Battery + 6.6 kW V2L Discharge Suspension Layout Front & Rear Independent Double-Wishbone Coil Springs 3. Do You Actually Need 3,500 kg Towing, or Is 2,500 kg Enough?
Most dual-cab owners tow boats, camper trailers, or 2.2T caravans where the 1.5T Shark 6 is already effortless—would you pay extra for a 2.0T 3.5T-rated heavy-duty trim?

Having the 1.5T Shark 6 at $57,900 for 90% of lifestyle/2.5T ute buyers and a 2.0T Heavy-Duty 3.5T tow variant for big horse floats and 3.5T vans covers the entire market!

@lucas_stew_de Also awesome that existing Shark 6 owners get the refined Tow Mode generator curve via OTA software update.

@KieranThompson Honestly my 1.5T Shark 6 tows our 2.3-tonne boat effortlessly already, but a 2.0T DMO option will silence the last remaining diesel holdouts.

Interesting point about the charging curve. I found that plugging in around 15–18% SOC gives the fastest sustained peak kW before the BMS gently tapers above 80%.

Subscribed to this thread. Has anyone here compared this behaviour before and after the latest DiLink OTA firmware update? Mine felt noticeably smoother in low-speed traffic afterwards.

Great write-up! If anyone is on the fence, definitely take a 45-minute test drive on coarse-chip highway tarmac first — the acoustic glass makes a bigger difference than the spec sheet suggests.

Thanks for sharing the real-world numbers! Dealers rarely explain this clearly during handover, so having verified owner telemetry on the forum saves everyone a lot of guesswork.

Good catch on those specifications. I checked the service manual torque specs and fuse layout over the weekend and everything matches what you outlined here.
