OBD2 Diagnostics Guide for BYD EVs & PHEVs: Reading Cell Voltages, SOH, Temps & Clearing Ghost Fault Codes with CarScanner Pro
-
Want to see your real Blade Battery State of Health (SOH), individual cell voltages (all 126 to 172 cells), battery coolant inlet/outlet temperatures, DC fast-charging power request vs actual delivery, and clear ghost fault codes? Here is the complete OBD2 setup guide for BYD owners.
1. Recommended Bluetooth LE 4.0/5.0 OBD2 Adapters
Do not buy a $10 unbranded blue ELM327 clone — they drop multi-frame CAN messages needed to read 126+ battery cells. Use one of these verified adapters:
- Vgate vLinker MC+ (BLE 4.0) or Vgate iCar Pro 2S (BLE 5.2) (~$35–$55 AUD / £22–£35 on Amazon)
- OBDLink CX (Rock-solid auto-sleep mode, also works with ABRP live telemetry!)
2. Connection Profile in CarScanner ELM OBD2 (iOS / Android)
- Plug the dongle into the OBD2 port under the driver's dash (above the accelerator/brake pedals).
- Open CarScanner → Settings → Connection → Connection Profile.
- Select Brand:
BYDand choose:BYD Atto 3 / Yuan Plus / Dolphin (e-Platform 3.0)BYD Seal / Sealion 7BYD DM-i / DMO PHEV (Sealion 6 / Seal U / Shark 6)
- Open the Dashboard tab to view live BMS SOH %, Min/Max Cell Voltage (V), Min/Max Pack Temp (°C), and 12V Aux Voltage.

Hooked up the Vgate iCar Pro 2S with ABRP (A Better Routeplanner) on Apple CarPlay during our Brisbane-to-Cairns road trip! Because ABRP reads live SOC % and real-time kWh consumption straight from the OBD2 dongle, its arrival SOC predictions at every fast charger were accurate to within 1%!
-
Also super handy if you ever get a temporary "Check EV System" ghost code after a flat 12V battery or an interrupted faulty public DC charger handshake — you can go to Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) in CarScanner, read the exact module code, and clear the latched shadow codes once the charger is unplugged.

For anyone troubleshooting AC cooling performance in 40°C summer: remember that BYD uses the AC refrigerant chiller plate to cool the Blade Battery simultaneously! In CarScanner you can watch the electronic expansion valve split cooling between the cabin evaporator and the HV battery plate when pack temps hit
36°C. -
Quick tip on AC cooling: by default in DiLink Climate Settings, the AC Economy mode is set to "Economical". Switching that setting to "Comfort" lets the heat pump compressor run at full output in Aussie summers!

Just tested the October 2026 CarScanner update on my BYD Shark 6 — it now decodes both the front 170kW and rear 150kW motor inverter temperatures plus DMO generator RPM and fuel trim!

Appreciate the honest perspective! Every EV and PHEV platform has trade-offs, and seeing real long-term feedback like this is why independent owner forums are way more useful than brochure numbers.
-
For anyone reading this later: make sure you enable SOC calibration by charging to 100% on AC at least once every two to three weeks so the BMS range estimator stays dead accurate.

Interesting point about the charging curve. I found that plugging in around 15–18% SOC gives the fastest sustained peak kW before the BMS gently tapers above 80%.
